7 tips to encourage you to communicate more in your native language if you find it difficult to speak it with your child at home.

I was recently interviewed for The French newspaper Le Figaro and on this occasion, the subject was about how best to maintain a child’s language skills and culture for French children living abroad.

It inspired me to write this blog to share my thoughts on this! As a teacher and a mother, I know that it is a challenge.

1. Language and culture are connected!

Speaking a language is not only the use of words to communicate, it is how we share our culture and traditions, as well as our history, sense of humour and emotions!

2. Analyse your context: It will help with any expectations or frustrations.

Not all children with a French parent hear French being spoken to them every day. Ask yourself…

  • How often does my child hear spoken French during a week?
  • Who speaks French to her/him?
  • Does my child understand when I speak French?
  • Does he reply in French or English?
  • When my child tries to speak French, are they confident?

3. Make a plan!

The most common strategies

  • One person – One language / each parent speaks in their native language.
  • The minority language is spoken at home. In this case French
  • When & Where: Plan moment(s) in your daily or weekly family routine which are always in French.

I advise choosing and adapting any strategy to fit in with your own family lifestyle!

4. What to avoid?

First try not to worry too much about it, remove any stress around the language!

  • Don’t force your child to reply in French or repeat all the time, they will be discouraged to speak!
  • Avoid systematic translation: It is not necessary, and this would be a missed opportunity to teach more and expand their vocabulary in a natural manner: you could explain the meaning of a word in French with other words, discuss possibilities with your child and/or you can mime, draw while explaining this in French.
  • Don’t expect perfection. One learns by experimenting and therefore making mistakes is part of the process.
  • Don’t give up, even if your child replies in English or mixes up both languages.

5. The importance of making it fun and meaningful.

  • When your child is having fun, she/he is not frightened to experiment, so in this case not frightened to speak.
  • Your child needs a reason to speak. They will naturally communicate if it is useful.
  • Ideally your child forgets you are speaking in French and just communicates with you (even if in English sometimes or with an imperfect French) and feels that there is no pressure!

6. Several practical ideas to keep it as effortless as possible for you and your child!

  • Speak French during everyday life routine: morning and evening routine, meals…
  • Read stories: will improve their language skills.
  • Play together: with any toys or board games that you both enjoy.
  • Cook together: when following instructions, they will develop their listening skills and expand their vocabulary.
  • Sing songs: children’s songs but also your favourite adult songs in French! When singing they will effortlessly absorb grammatical structures.

7. Learning a language is a journey.

Children learn a language through hearing it first. Their progress will depend on the amount of exposure they get. Therefore don’t compare their progress with friends or siblings. Each child has their own journey depending on their daily life.

Alors keep at it, having fun will have a positive effect on everyone’s motivation!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or send an email!

My little one was given the opportunity to learn French for an entire term with Club Petit Pierrot – Fun French For Children

I’ve always been told that this is the best age for kids to learn a new language. She previously did a term of Mandarin but I felt that it was a little too hard for both of us ?

I think learning a new language is so important especially if you like to travel like us! It also will bring amazing job opportunities for her in the future. I can’t tell you how many amazing teaching opportunities I’ve missed out on because I don’t speak a second language (I wish I paid more attention in Spanish and French in secondary school now lol)

My first thoughts about our first class

I was a intimidated by the fact the classes are completely in French. I can just about say “bonjour” ? That quickly changed. With actions and the tone of voice, you can quickly start to understand what’s being said. Little miss on the other hand just threw herself into the classes! She took part in every activity and was completely confident!

What I liked about the classes

That fact that it was completely in French. I know I said at first I was intimidated by the fact I didn’t know any but I can see why it’s better than having the words translated for you. You get to hear and see the language being used in every day situations.

Parents are encouraged to join in. There’s a sign saying no mobiles which is great (I did of course use mine just for taking photos and videos for the purpose of this post) Kids learn more when we get involved too!

I also liked the structure of the class. There was a new topic every week but the structure was the same. Kids this age (she’s 3) need structure especially seeing as she is starting school soon. The classes seem very well planned too. As a parent you will be happy to know you’re getting value for your money as well as teachers that care about your child’s learning.

What little miss liked…

I asked her what she enjoyed about her lesson and she said she really liked her teacher which was super sweet to hear! It’s important to have great teachers when learning because then kids will of course enjoy the classes more!

What little miss learned…

She learned to say “hello” “thank you” and a few colours too! After a few sessions it was like she understood everything her teacher would say. “Sit down” “stand up” “listen” etc, she responded the correct way to all these commands.

Will we continue?

I would absolutely love for Naya to continue. She’s really enjoyed this term and I’ve seen great progress! There’s a possibility that she might be starting “big school” in September so we’re just waiting to hear about that before making any commitments.

I do highly recommend these classes and you can find out more information on their website here

If not, they must surrender.

Laura says “This film reminds me of my father as I always watched it with him! It’s a fun film as some of the tasks are similar to the Hercules’s ones, but some of them are reinvented in a really comical way! I have seen it so many times, I can still say what happens during each task and in the right order!”

Peau d’Âne

Donkey skin is Laetitia’s favourite film . Adapted from the tale by Charles Perrault & music by Michel Legrand – suitable for 4 to 10 years old.

SYNOPSIS: In a magical, faraway land, a widower king decrees that he will wed his daughter, the princess (Catherine Deneuve), because she’s the only woman able to match his former queen’s beauty. To dodge the  union, the princess with the help of a magical fairy disguises herself as a donkey and escapes to a neighbouring kingdom. There, the donkey-skinned maiden encounters a handsome prince who falls in love with her.

Laetitia says: “In my memories this film is full of colours and magic, with magnificent decors and costumes. I watched it with my sister and I remember that we couldn’t decide which dress was our favourite between the “moon colour” one or the “weather colour” one! So beautiful! We also had fun placing a ring in our cake dough singing, like the main character does in the famous scene.”

Un indien dans la ville

An Indian in the city is Amélie’s favourite film and is suitable for 10 to 16 years old.

SYNOPSIS: Steph, a commodities broker living in Paris, wants a divorce from his wife Patricia to marry another woman: Charlotte. However, Patricia has been living among the Venezuelan Amazonas Indians for the past 13 years, so Steph travels to the Indian village to meet her and ask her to sign the divorce papers. When they meet, Patricia tells Steph that they have a teenage son, Mimi-Siku, who has been raised as an Amazonas Indian. Patricia tells Steph she will not sign the divorce papers unless Steph takes Mimi-Siku on a visit to Paris, which he agrees to.

Amélie says: “I discovered Paris with this film as I had never been to the French capital before! It was an opportunity to see the Eiffel Tower from a different perspective 😉 It was also really funny to see the differences between the Indian habits and culture and ours.”

Kirikou et la sorcière

Kirikou and the Sorceress is Stella’s son Harry’s favourite French movie: Adapted from an African tale and suitable for 3 to 8 years old

SYNOPSIS: The tiny Kirikou is born into an African village upon which a sorceress called Karaba has cast a terrible spell. He wants to rid the village of the curse so he goes on a voyage to the Forbidden Mountain, where the Wise Man of the Mountain, who knows of Karaba and her secrets, awaits him.

Harry says: “I recently rewatched my childhood favourite of ‘Kirikou et la Sorcière’ and incredibly it was as good as I remembered it. It’s a film of such honesty and humanity that I think it truly bewitches adults and children alike. Kirikou teaches the value of curiosity and the wisdom in persistence, all drawn with a clear respect for nature and a refreshing cultural setting. A must see!

Ratatouille

And finally, we would like to recommend this film too even if it’s not a French one, as it represents the culture of French gastronomy.

This is Julien’s favourite film and is suitable for children from 4 years old.

SYNOPSIS: Remy dreams of becoming a great chef, despite being a rat in a definitely rodent-phobic profession. He moves to Paris to follow his dream, and with the help of hapless garbage boy Linguini he puts his culinary skills to the test in the kitchen but he has to stay in hiding at the same time, with hilarious consequences.

Julien says: “I love this film about French gastronomy, full of “clichés” of Paris. Did you know that the restaurant in the film “Chez Gusteau” has been inspired by “La Tour d’Argent” the oldest restaurant in Paris? Just to warn you, after watching this film you will crave French food!”

It’s not hard to figure out why talking to children helps with speech and language development, but a new study has found that communicating alone is not enough – it’s HOW you communicate that really matters.

Cognitive scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that parents think using educational toys, apps and flashcards is the best way to teach their children, when all they really need to do is engage them in chat.   Back and forth conversation, they found, changes a child’s brain. It boosts brain development and language skills.   The conclusion: parents shouldn’t just talk, they should also listen.

I read this research on language development with interest as although it’s new, the philosophy behind it is something we’ve been doing at Club Petit Pierrot from the very beginning.

When I started out, twenty five years ago now, flashcards and repetition were all the rage. If your children knew all the words to Sur Le Pont D’Avignon then, as a teacher, you were doing well. But this just wasn’t for me. Instead, I believed (and still do) that young children learn a second language by absorbing it like their native tongue and I devised an immersion programme to encourage children to communicate in French from the moment they come into the class.

Those of you who are familiar with our concept or our classes will know that conversation plays a huge part in what we do. Parents often think they’ll be able to sit and spectate, they sometimes get quite a shock when they realise how important it is for them to join in.

For me, building relationships with children and communicating with them in any way we can is absolutely crucial. And not just for first or second language development, but for a whole host of other things too.

When you really engage with children and make it fun as we do, they are happy and want to communicate back. You can’t fool children, if you’re not genuinely interested in them and what they’re doing, you won’t keep their attention for very long – or even capture it in the first place. It’s also important for us that adults have fun too – we sing, play games, do arts and crafts and don’t allow the distraction of mobile phones!

Of course, it’s all well and good engaging with your children for 45 minutes in a class. The real key to success is to do this all the time, to talk with your child, not to your child. Have conversations with them about their favourite TV show, toy or even what you’ve been doing all day – anything that’ll interest them. I used to love it when my son asked “how was your day mummy?” I was always quite touched by this and it was a great conversation starter between us both.

“It’s almost magical how parental conversation appears to influence the biological growth of the brain,” says John Gabrieli, the senior author of the MIT study. “Having a conversation requires children to practice understanding what the other person is trying to say, and how to respond appropriately. This is obviously a very different skill from just listening.”

So there you go, surely there can’t be a better reason to make yourself a cup of tea, grab a comfy chair and sit down with your child for a good old chat!
