If you've ever spoken French to your child only to get an answer back in English, you are far from alone. It's one of the most common stages in raising a bilingual child, and it's completely normal.
1. Don't Despair
This is not a sign that the French isn't "going in." Children absorb far more than they produce, and understanding always comes before speaking. The fact that your child understands you and responds appropriately shows the language is working.
2. Keep Speaking French
Consistency is everything. Even if the replies come back in English, keep your input in French and don't be tempted to switch.
3. Mime, Show, Act it Out
Instead of translating, try miming or pointing to objects . It keeps the moment playful and helps your child connect meaning directly to the French word, without translating. It also tends to make the whole exchange far more fun for both of you.
4. Don't Force Repetition
Resist the urge to ask your child to "say it in French" over and over. Putting them on the spot can make language feel like a test rather than a natural part of life, which is the opposite of what we want.
5. Play With the Words
Turn vocabulary into a game. Repeat words in silly voices, stretch out the sounds, exaggerate the pronunciation or turn them into a little song. The more playful the repetition, the more naturally it sticks.
6. Mixing Languages? That's Progress
If your child answers using a mix of French and English and/or another mother tongue, that's not a problem, it's actually a brilliant stage of bilingual development. It shows their brain is actively juggling both languages. Simply reformulate their sentence correctly and move on, no need to make a big deal of it.
Whatever you do, never let it become a chore.
Keep it light, keep it natural, and keep it fun. The most powerful tool in raising a bilingual child isn't correction, it's connection!
